About

Run Rise Shine is where I get to combine my two passions: running and coaching.  I believe that running can be life changing, and I believe in the power of a coach to bring out the best in an athlete. ~ Nicki Monson

Nicki’s Family – 2021

Nicki grew up in Southern California and as an energetic kid she spent her time at the beach, twirling baton, playing tennis, and going skiing with her family. She chose Northern Arizona University for college for its outstanding skiing academics, then headed north to Anchorage, Alaska where she began her finance career in the energy sector. After 4 years, work took her to Chicago which is now home, where her family and career continued to flourish. In 2011 Nicki married her awesome and supportive husband Tim and together they have built their blended family life with 4 children who are now high school, college and full fledged adults!

With a thriving career as a senior business leader, in her mid-40’s Nicki was over-stressed and approaching burnout. She took a 4 month sabbatical with 3 main goals: spend time with family, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro (see blog!) and train for her first marathon. Check, check, double check!

With a new focus on using running to balance her otherwise hectic life, Nicki continued to train with a coach, race and pursue her running goals. In 2021 at age 49, she clocked personal bests in every distance from 5k to marathon, including a Boston Qualifying time in the marathon (3:42).

As she navigated the challenges of a career in a male-dominated field, Nicki developed her passion for coaching, supporting and developing female leaders, helping them find their voice, build confidence and claim their seat at the table.

In 2021 she retired from her 28 year corporate career and is excited to combine her experience and heart for coaching with her passion for running. Nicki lives in Naperville, IL with her husband Tim, her kids (1-4 depending who’s coming and going!) and two dogs, Ross and Rachel.

If you want to go for a run or drop a note, she’d love to hear from you!
